question about oilhead 1200c

I am wanting a 1200c in addition to keeping my RT. Are the 1200c engines dual spark? Basically would my RT service manual cover the 1200c engine? Any other dialogue about the diffences between the two motorcycles, other than the obvious, is appreciated.

Are you asking about the newer "hexhead" R1200xx engine or the older R1200 engine used in the cruiser?

Presuming you are talking about the cruiser motor, yes, the cruisers all dual-spark. For most items an R1150 manual is pretty close. The big difference is in fuel delivery. The cruiser has duel throttle bodies in a single housing located in a duel compartment air box. Only minimal sync adjustment is possible and the procedure is totally different.

thanks. yes it is a cruiser.

any ideas on how loud the pipes are? I live in a subdivision and sometimes leave a 4 in the morning.

The ones with stock pipes are pretty quiet, no worries there. My buddy used to own an R1200C with aftermarket pipes, which were pretty damn loud. It was a fun ride, but major vibes would set in over 70mph in top gear.

I recommend that you go the to the R1200C website www.chromeheads.org and poke around for more detailed information posted by a group of 12C enthusiasts.

I own a 98C and it is not two plug per cylnder engine.

The stock exhaust is a pleasant rumble but not the loud potato-potato sound of the HD exhaust. There are aftermarket exhausts such as Z-Technik that may be more to you liking. The 12C is actually a pretty good around town and touring machine but has been outgunned by the larger displacement cruisers. At almost 10 years old, it will still turn heads at cruiser gatherings.

I am pretty certain that up to the last offering of the R1200C models in 2004 that BMW did not put integrated front and back brakes on the bike. On the early models ABS brakes was not standard and was offered as an option. Same thing with heated hand grips.
