R1100RT Odessy battery

I read somewhere that the Odessey battery can be mounted on it's side. Has anyone with an R1100RT ever mounted theirs this way? I hate having the terminals so unaccessible under the fuel tank. Thanks! thumbsup.gif

Go ahead and mount it on it's side. The cable will be just shy of being long enough, which can remedied by carefully flatting the connector with a pair of pliers.

Mine has been mounted sideways for four years, no problemo. Both cables work fine in the sideways mount. If you want it right side up, the ground cable will need an extension.

On my '98 R1100RT, I ordered one of those copper battery adapters (forget who) for the ground side. Even with the adapter, the cable was stretching a little bit. I gently took a utility knife and sliced a bit of the black tape on the wiring harness to allow more of the negative battery cable to stretch. This allowed me to mount battery upright. I was disappointed in the fact that I had just ordered the "jump-start terminal kit" from BMW, that bolts up to the positive battery terminal and allows you to jump start the bike quickly. I had it installed on the gel battery that came with the bike. However, with the Odyssey, I could not figure out a quick way of hooking it up to the positive side of the battery, so I said the hell with it- let's put the dang tupperware on and go do some riding. Anybody that has found a way to fix this problem (retrofitting the jump start terminal kit to an Odyssey battery), it would be nice if they could post it for us sometime mechanically-challenged folks.

Have had my new Odyssey mounted on its side now for a couple of months with no problems in my 96 R1100RT. Have seen others recommend this too.
