Cruise Control Surging

My cruise control (only 10 days old) surges when it is active below 60mph confused.gif

It is more exagerated on a downgrade, but still annoying on the level.

Anyone know any a for this?

Additional information:

1) The cruise control works in every gear.

It will go all the way down to 27.5mph (indicated) in second gear. Probably will work in first gear, but I haven't actually tried it yet.

2) A VERY nice item is the Resume feature.

After dropping out of the cruise control, a touch on the resume and the conrol returns to the last active speed.

AND THIS is true even if you have stopped and come to a complete stop. Once you're moving again, touch resume and the previous speed will be resumed again. clap.gif

But the surging, any ideas there?

Sounds exactly like surging on non-cruise control bikes. According to BMW the cruise control is not holding the throttle steady wink.gif

If you deactivate the cruise control and can then maintain steady throttle then what you are experiencing is NOT surging. Surging is what the oilheads did and I had two that did it badly. What it sounds like is the cruise control is having trouble maintaining a steady speed. This is not the same as surging which, I believe, is resultant from inconsistances in the combustion between the cylinders. BMW basically eliminated this condition when they dual-plugged and added a second O2 sensor to the boxer. If your cruise control is unable to maintain a steady speed you should take it back to your dealer. BTW, my '05 RT cruise control does have some detectable "hunting" below 35mph... but it definitely is not surging. My guess is that all vehicles with cruise control do this to some degree. It's just more detectable when so much less mass as there is on a motorcycle.

As others have said I don't think its surging as that term is normally used (although it probably feels very similar). I suspect it is just the cruise control trying to maintain the speed and its just not able to hold a steady throttle setting at those speeds. Some of the magazine reviews complained about this as well. It is have never happened to me (at least not that I have noticed) but I never use my cruise control for anything less than about 90kph (about 55 MPH).

Sounds more likely that the cruise control is "hunting". I'd suspect some sort of adjustment would correct this. For what it's worth my cruise 06RT is spot on and doesn't vary one way or the other in any noticable way.

It happened on my HD and it was because the throttle was a little too stiff for the mechanism. Try oiling up the throttle cable. Some of the RTs had very strong throttle springs and then get a little sticky on the return.

I sound like Ed.....cool. lmao.giflmao.gif

a bit maybe, but ed would've described the qualities in the oil as well as the physical and metallurgical elements of the faulty throttle cable causing the sticking. in addition, the latent spring sprung characteristics would obviously be addressed. close tho! lmao.giflmao.gif

where's huzband?

Yes, as mentioned by Albert, the better term would have been 'Hunting' dopeslap.gif

But below 60mph it is constant and annoying and in need of resolution.

Has anyone had this corrected under warranty? And if so, where?

The 'solution' is at hand. clap.gif

For those of us who also use the cruise control at slower speeds, such as going through town with little traffic and wanting to ensure staying within the speed limit without constant manual monitoring.

SOLUTION:

Stay in a gear that holds the RPM down around 3000.

That smooths out the power and the 'hunting' is no longer noticed.

Thanks to all for tolerating my accentric applications. smirk.gif
