Electrical question

I want to hook up my new Autocom to a power supply near the air box. I have found a plug with a switched power supply right behind the fuse box but I have no iddea what it is for. It has a blue connector attached to it.

The wires going to the plug are Brown, Brown/Blue and Brown/Black.

Can anyone tell me what this plug is for?

Sounds like the diagnostic connector to read Motrnoic faults on the bike. It will be a 4 pin connector that plugs into a female connector piece that holds it in place.

If it is for the motronic, I dont think it is a good idea to tap into it. No experience on the bike, but when I tapped into a computer circuit in a vehicle, I had several computer errors.

As mentioned, that's the diagnostic connector. Poor choice. The rear accessory plug is near there, you could use that.

You would be better off finding the wire to the rear light and breaking into that with a 'scotchlok' style connector -this circuit is easily able to handle the load and also switched.

Wherever you get your positive power from, be sure it is switched and has nothing to do with the engine management system. Autocom recommends you tap into either fuse #4 or #5 (I can't recall exactly) counting in from the left as you sit on the bike. Call them (888-851-4327) and they'll give you the correct fuse.

However, when it comes to the negative wire, there is one place and one place only that will provide you with the cleanest connection, and that is the ground on the battery.

Ideally, if you wanted to guarantee yourself clean power, you would use Part #1546, which is normally considered the power connection for CANbus bikes like the latest 1200RT's. It takes power directly from the battery, but uses a relay trigger for the positive side. Connect the relay trigger wire to any switched lead and you'll get clean power straight from the battery, which will shut off when you shut the bike off.

Your observations are interesting about a clean earth. I think you will find things like the ECU and the likes are much more in need of a good earth return than an intercom. Tens of thousands of people are enjoying communicating via a basic power feed and return circuit. Your approach is just a little OTT wink.gif
