bobanddianne
We are about to order a new RT and are seeking information on the Tire Pressure option and particularly what information is displayed. Are the front and rear tire pressures actually displayed? And if not that, then what information is given? Link to comment
John Bentall
I think pressures are displayed if they fall below a user-selected value rather than being displayed continuously. Link to comment
Pictou
Just curious - does anyone know if they will tell you which tire is low? I have on 03 Murano with tire pressure sensors. While it displays all four tire pressures it does not tell you which tire is low. You have to get the guage out and check until you find the right one - for me that is always the last one I check. It drives me nuts. Link to comment
TomfromMD
I hope it's not the BMW auto system which uses the ABS sensors - simply a warning light that tells you one (or more) of the tires is low. Link to comment
onedae
the display shows both front and rear tire pressures. the system also triggers a warning light if the tire pressure falls outside of a preset acceptable range. works great. Link to comment
dawn
I just picked up my 07 RT yesterday. Display shows front and rear pressures as one of the displays you toggle through with the on board computer. Not sure what it shows if you only get the TP monitor and not the computer. Link to comment
bobanddianne
Many thanks for the valuable information. If the warning was similar to our car's ABS tire warning, we were thinking of getting an 05 or 06. But this makes the '07 a MUST. Thanks again. Bob & Dianne Los Angeles Link to comment
Kritou
I have been using the screw on tyre pressure monitors for several years and they have done the job well. I now glance at the wheel each time I get on the bike. The model I use is Ultraseal's and the yellow warning band starts to show when the pressure falls about 4psi below the rated figure. They are inexpensive and don't cause the the tyre to massively deflate, as the uninformed will claim, if they ever detached. Sadly they appear unsuitable for the 90 degree valve on my R1200RT's front wheel Link to comment
Israel
It is a nice feature, but I do not think it should be a deal breaker. Link to comment
LuckyLeif
I have the TPM option on my RT. Digital read-out seems to agree with manual measurements, and interestingly the readout does not change as the tires heat up (we'll see if this remains the case in August heat). Primary utility of the TPM is not in substitution of regular checking, rather as a real-time monitor it gives an early warning of pressure leak while on the road and can get you to pull off prior to onset of handling difficulties or tire failure. SEATTLE_RIDER
I guess it must have just been the TPM in the wire wheels that have been recalled. My '07 GSA with TPM was recalled and the units removed in January. They started doing it in Europe last Sept with all TPM equipped bikes. I do miss it. It was a nice feature to just toggle through your comp and see the front & rear tire pressure. The dealership is saving all the removed units with the owner's name on them....in case BMW comes up with a fix for the supposed "rapid deflating problem". They gave you a choice at the time of the recall.....either save them at the dealership or get an immediate refund for the cost of the option at your time of purchase. As stated above...........not a substitute for actually checking your TP. Link to comment
Paul Mihalka
Tire pressure monitor recall was only on wire wheeled R1200GS and Adventure bikes. The latest ones all came without it, even if it was ordered originally. TPM will be available again on the wire wheel bikes. Apparently they fixed whatever problem it had. Link to comment
bobanddianne
After two days with our pretty new 2007 RT, we can now answer our own question. The Tire Pressure Display is PERFECT. It shows both the Front and Rear tire pressures while you are riding. When I got home, I checked the pressure with a standard tire guage and the numbers were perfectly correct for both tires. I had started out in the cool morning air, and by midday the tire pressures had both gone up two pounds, accurately/appropriately responding to the warmer temperature. I took the bike out again as the sun was setting and, yes the tire pressures were back where they had been in the morning. Aren't BMW's Wonderful? Bob & Dianne Danks Link to comment
MickFinn
Company called Kisan Technologies now supply digital tyre pressure monitors for all types of bikes. I have just ordered one for my Rt12. Reviews very positive. They have various fitments for different valve stems. Link to comment
Mike05
Have used the Fire Fly Low Pressure Indicators for over a year. They have proven both effective & easy to see when tire pressure drops 4 or more pounds. Link to comment
bababooey
After two days with our pretty new 2007 RT, we can now answer our own question. The TPM wasn't on the top of my list of features while shopping for my RT, actually it wasn't on the list at all! But now having it on the bike for the last 5 months and actually getting a staple that punctured the rear tire while accelerating to insane speed onto the highway, I think its a must! Warning light went off and I could see the PSI count down a PSI every ~ 30 to 45 seconds. Plenty of time to start to think about exiting the highway, find a place in the shade to pull over in a nice empty park and ride lot. I fear if I didn't have it I would have probably driven another 5 to 8 miles on the freeway before it went nearly flat and I'd have been stuck trying to fix the flat with cars flying by at 80 mph. -Me.
