brennaman
I had heard, now more than once, that the 1 piece suit is not quite as good in the rain. I was leaning more towards the 1 piece, but if it leaks more in the crotch, maybe I should get the 2 piece. I ride everyday to work, so on the rainy day's, I would really hate to walk around work with a wet crotch for the first couple of hours. How much rain does it take for the 2 piece to start leaking as opposed to the 1 piece? Thanks Phil Link to comment
Rocket_Cowboy
Howdy Phil, I've never had either of my 2-piece suits leak in the rain ... at least anywhere other than the neck when I didn't have it closed off right. I do treat my suits with Scotchgard as well, but they have been water tight for me ... even when I've filled the pockets with ice in the summer to keep me warm. That ice melts, and runs out of the pockets rather than into the suit. Link to comment
Davis
On my RT it takes a HARD rain to get wet in my one-piece. I can ride pretty much all day in a steady rain without the crotch leaking. In fact when I do start to get wet after an hour or more of hard rain, it's more leaking around my neck than the crotch. When I still had naked bikes, it would leak more at the crotch, but was still good for a 30 minute thunderstorm or several hour steady rain without leaking. Link to comment
snod
It has been my observation that the main reason the one piece leaks at the crotch is due to water pooling in that area. With the jacket overlapping the pants in the two piece there is effectively a tent over your crotch. If you keep water from pooling in the crotch area, you have minimal leakage. It is, for me, easier to keep water from pooling with the two piece. Of course it has become a mute issue since I have developed a severe case of Dunlop Disease. Dun-lopped over my belt. I spent better than 24 hours straight in solid soaking rain last August in my two-piece. I had some neck sepage, but that was all. Link to comment
DavidEBSmith
How much rain does it take for the 2 piece to start leaking as opposed to the 1 piece? It takes a lot of rain for the 2 piece to start leaking. I can only think of two times in almost 10 years that my 2 piece has leaked. One was a deluge in which I had to slow way down, which allowed the rain to fall straight down and pool in my lap instead of getting blown over my head by the fairing and windshield. The other time was riding through 8 hours of the tail end of Katrina. In that one, all my gear failed - waterproof gloves, boots, Stich, even the inside of my helmet was soaked. You have to pay attention to getting the velcro flap closed on the pants, and some extra Gore-Tex-compatible waterproofing spray around the area helps. Link to comment
INFERNL
What's the best place to get a 'Stitch? I want to get one for Fall Torrey - but I don't want to be stressing out waiting for it. Any idea what the turn around time is for placing an order, and receiving your 'Stitch? Gleno swore by them, and one saved his hide at least once. That's reason enough for me to have one right there... Link to comment

Only from the factory (Duluth, MN): www.aerostich.com The Roadcrafters are custom-made in your choice of colors, and they have a wide range of sizes/shapes to fit. You get a discount if you actually visit the factory for a measurement, but if you follow their instructions you should be able to take decent measurements at home, and they'll make alterations for you after the first pass; you just need to pay for shipping. On the other hand, you can pay full price and if you don't like Aerostich for some reason, you ought to be able to re-coup most of your money by re-selling. Good luck in your search Link to comment

RichM
I found a one piece on the IBMWR site for 250. Sent it into Aerostich to have two minor repairs, new armor, and waterproofing for an additional 140. 390 bucks and I'm not complaining. Link to comment
hyperion
Seal the seams with tent seam sealer. I also spray the suit with the 3M Waterproofing/Anti Mildew spray which I believe works better than Nikwax. Link to comment
flyingreg
If your mind is already made up on getting a 'stich, then disregard what I am going to suggest. However, if you want a premium riding suit that is tremendously more versatile than a 'stich, then consider a suit from Cycleport. PANTS, JACKET, ONE-PIECE. I see you live in Missouri where humidity was invented. The cycleport gear will keep you cool in summer, warm in winter, and always dry in the rain, period. No one beats their warranty, no one. Don't take my word for it, READ THIS and THIS. Hope I didn't muddy the water, so to speak. Link to comment
Mike
Greg-- Can the Cycleport stuff be custom sized? I don't see any option for that on the web pages you linked to. I do have one comment, though I admit up front that this goes back a few years. The company, at that time, was known as Motoport, instead of Cycleport. I ordered a pair of overpants for my son that were to be lengthened by a couple of inches. The pants did not show up when they were supposed to, and I got conflicting information on the status of the order each time I called. When the pants did arrive, all that the company had done was to sew a strip of similar (definitely not the same) nylon material onto the bottom of the legs to lengthen them. Overall, it was as bad an experience as I've had with any catalog order. Like I said, that was some time ago (at least four or five years)--hopefully they're better now. I have heard people speak highly of their products in the past couple of years. Link to comment

flyingreg
Mike, I can't comment on past history. My order was handled very well with great customer service. I am totally sold on my two piece mesh kevlar suit. It has worked well from 26 degrees up to 117 with no complaints and no extra layering needed when using the two piece liner they offer. Hi Larry, Yes you can come in and get sized. We don't make custom made suits. We do offer a few alterations such as sleeve/leg length, or upper body gussets. We can't take the suits in, we can only let them out. These suits are not designed to be tight, they are meant to be loose. There will be some bagginess to them. If there is anything else, please let me know. Sherry _______________________________________________________________________________________________ So they really just sell ya what ever they think is close and then charge you for the alteration. I was really hoping they would make me a "custom fit" riding suit. Whip Link to comment
Lone_RT_rider
Whip, when they get done with the suit and you are riding the bike it feels perfect. I spent 1.5 hours getting fit for mine. They put in 3 or 4 (can't remember) alterations into my suit. They had me try on 3 different styles (or cuts) of suits in order to start from the correct place with the alterations. I showed up on my R1100RT and made sure that I mentioned that I also needed to use the suit for my R1100S as well and they took that into account perfectly. When I am on either bike the suit fits correctly and doesn't even feel like its there. These are purpose built suits with the purpose being riding. If you are looking for something that works on and off the bike these are probably not for you. They are far less that stylish when walking around and really don't fit that great for even standing straight up. But, when I am slightly canted forward on the bike (even in RT position) everything fits perfect. I know there are several thin members from this board that have Roadcrafters and are very happy with them. I think Sean has one (which Sean escapes me) but he is a thin man. I think it's someone that Russell has ridden to Torrey with in the past (Spring 2003). I really think you will be happy with the Stich Whip. I am an engineer and a cynic, if I didn't like mine in any way (other than my crazy choice in color for it...lol) I would gladly let you know. For the life of me though, I can't come up with any reason to hate it. Shawn Link to comment
