Just wondering if anybody as any tips, tricks, or suggestions for replacing the clutch in a 96 RT. I figure I'll try and get it done next month before the weather gets to nice. I'm net really loking forward to it but better now than on the side of the road.

Thanks, Erich

Search and read though the "Spine Lube" threads. Those will give you a good overview of the disassembly aspects of the job.

Go to the trouble to get or make the guide pins mentioned in the threads. Makes the job much easier.

ISFA once you get to it, it's pretty straight forward for the average competent DIYer mechanic. Use new bolts when reassembling the clutch pack. Centering alignment is not particularly critical as the pack self centers the first time it is used. Visually centered enough for the transmission spline to re-engage is usually enough.

Be sure to lube those splines in reassembly!

Post here if you have any specific questions. thumbsup.gif

If possible take lots of pictures during disassembly, may help when putting it all back.

Pictures of where wiring harnesses are tie wrapped to the frame are a big help.

I am in the process of doing the big spline lube/clutch replacement right now. I found a thread from ADV riders to be very helpful.

I used my pushrod an a 12mm socket with electrical tape wrapped on as a centering tool. It seemed to work well. Just be gentle with the pushrod. And yes, buy some long bolts and cut the heads off for guide pins. I found that the Harbor freight heat gun blows... but not hot enough. I ended up using a plumbers torch with care. BMW thread lock is crazy strong and heat resistant. All in all, not too difficult.

Thanks for the info, I hope to see about getting the parts ordered soon so i can get started in late feb/early march. I didn't get much riding done last year and hope to give it a good go over so i don't spend all summer fixing things.

I have a pretty good heat gun, but had the same experience, and ended up using the torch. Problem is that you can't tell when it's hot enough that you won't round off the bolt or strip the threads, or when it's too hot that your swing arm becomes molton aluminum. I bought a infrared thermometer to measure the heat precisely for the rebuild (replacing swing arm, final drive carrier bearings).
