can't close R12RT topcase

Last night I opened by topcase to see if I could figure out how to remove the lock cylinder. Looked around and didn't see any obvious method so I tried to close it so I could go do some research (found a thread here .) The latch that should normally be up to close the box is in the down position and it won't move.

 

I didn't intentionally mess with anything and I'm not sure what I could have done inadvertently. Any advice?

Maybe you "locked" it before closing it.......or closed the "1st" handle (is the handle 2 piece of 1 piece?) too early?
