Someone mentioned I could turn it off by holding the starter button and turning the key...I think. Was this model designated to have it turned off or am I tricking the system?

It was designed to be able to turn ABS off, but not while riding. Correct: Hold down ABS button and then turn on ignition - no ABS, warning light stays on. To get ABS back, you stop, turn ignition key off. When you turn on again, you have ABS again.

Excellent! Thanks Paul! Tomorrow I'm riding a trail where I can see the definite advantage of no ABS.
