Rotor
I was reading another post where problems were experienced when Baehr commuication systems and radios were added to the bike. Apparently, the items added turn themselves off while in use. Maybe they would come back on, maybe not. I plan to add some of these accessories later, but for now I'm concerned about the heated jacket liner I plan to use this winter. In the other post they were referring to amps and I believe they were using the accessory port to power one or more items. I have no idea what the amperage pull is on the Gerbings jacket liner, but they advertise 177 watts. Can anyone comment about the bikes ability to support these items? I intend to use it for a ride in the north east at the end of September and don't want any surprises. I can't imagine there would be a problem, but it sure seems this Canbus system is creating electrical issues. My reasoning is this; if it won't support a radio/Baehr unit, how is it to power a heated vest? The bike is an 05 R12RT. Thanks, Rotor Link to comment

chrisolson
Gerbings should be connected directly to the battery using their supplied connections - you will not have any issues if you power them this way since the alternator supplies a huge amount of excess capacity above what it takes to run the bike. If you choose to power heated clothing off one of the accessory sockets (i.e CAN bus), there is a good chance that you will excede the amperage limit of the socket and the socket will shut off...this has nothing to do with the electrical capacity of the system. It is a reflection of the limits of the amount of power / current draw the system allows the accessory socket to experience. ... if it won't support a radio/Baehr unit I didn't see the other post, but comm systems in general, Baehr included, use very little amperage by themselves. Its possible other additional devices were connected to the accessory outlet and the CAN bus system decided that the combined load was greater than its limits and shut the socket off - or there was an issue with the Baehr or the system was in error and shut off power when it shouldn't have. Rotor
See below from the Gerbings site, 77 watts. -------------------------------------------------- Sorry, must have read it incorrectly. Thought it said 177. None-the-less, one would think that if BMW puts the accessory plug on the bike (knowing it will be used for things such as heated clothing), they would design it to support the demands placed upon it. Never had these issues with the 1150. Thanks to all that replied. Rotor Link to comment
JayW
The heated jacket liner will work fine with the stock accessory outlet. The only time mine shut off was when I tried to power both heated gloves at the same time. And yes, Gerbing's supplies the hardware to connect everything directly to the battery, which is easy to do. rickmoen
Just curious, here. Having just struggled mightily with having an XM radio plugged into the accessory socket and hearing Mr. Whine and Mr. Hum in the speakers of my Autocom system, I'm wondering if heated clothing plugged into the acc socket will also produce whine and hum. [i had to rewire the radio using a fuse block directly to the battery to get rid of the whine and hum. It is still faintly there, but the radio is now listenable.] Link to comment
Isettanut
I have an 05RT with istalled Gerbings dual controllers, windshield washer pump,xm MY-FI.powered tank bag, cell phone, radar det.,all switched on and off with the key. Plus the standard outlet in the dash, plus left rear acessory socket(this powers the relay that puts battery power to a six way fuse panel for the before mentioned farkels) and last but so important is a right hand rear acessory socket with straight battery power to charge the batt. if needed, charge an acessory anytime. Fear not the can-bus system. Leon 05RT Link to comment
