techammer
First post, so please bear with me. After years on airheads, I'm shopping for my first oilhead, probably R1100RT. Narrowed down to a few and wondering, all things being equal -- impossible, of course -- which would be preferable, a '96 with 20K miles or a '99 with 55K miles? Link to comment
leikam
I would have no worries about the '99 (I bought my '98 with 50k miles), but I'd want to know why the '96 has so few miles. Was it really ridden ~2k mi/yr or has it been sitting for most of its life? What's the history there? Link to comment
Doppelganger
Got a '99 with 44G. I love it and it loves me. We ride every day, and of course at night. Like a boy and his dog... Yeah - we're tight. Protection, good looks and how it performs! (beyond all expected norms) What can I say to those unblessed? "Go ride one, take it for a test!" The you'll know why that silly grin... each time I take it for a spin. Link to comment
Fajah
Love my 96, I have heard a lot about later models surging. Got mine 4 years ago with 8k on it, it had sat around a lot. If you don't go for the 96 let me know who is selling it, I might buy another. Also, the 96s have a good rep with the spline gear failure over other models, or so I have read. Link to comment
Trebor
In a previous life, I had a mechanic with an oilhead with 350K+ miles on it and minimal repairs along the way. Taught me to believe in the R bikes and ignore the miles. Maintenance is your watch-word. It will take you a long way. Link to comment
