Traveling with a laptop

I'd like to start taking my laptop but can't seem to figure out just how to carry it. How do you guys carry it, attach it to the bike and keep it dry? Thanks

On business trips, when I ride, I'll put the laptop in the top case. On the RT (49L top case) it's a close fit width wise so this may not be an option for you. I wouldn't be averse to doing a good plastic wrap (garbage bag?) and lashing it down to the seat if I had to. I've also considered simply leaving the laptop case at the office when I haul it. The case takes up the bulk of the room anyway and the mouse/power/cables can be easily stowed practially anywhere. I admit I haven't tried this but I wouldn't have a problem with it if the need be. I usually get 3 or 4 business trips a year that I can ride and these I treat like a partial paid vacation. thumbsup.gif Whatever it takes. grin.gif

I set my laptop bag on top of the passenger seat and secure it with the shoulder strap on the bag and a spiderweb type bungie.

I've carried a wide screen Compaq in the right side bag at an angle with clothing acting as the "padding" for the laptop. Seems to work just fine for that location.

As for trips longer than a few hours, I've placed the entire laptop and carrying bag in the top of the baggage placed on the carrying rack at the back of the bike. I do wrap it in a smaller garbage bag for waterproofing, just in case, but it really doesn't seem to be a problem.

A smaller laptop would fit perfectly in either of the side cases (R1200RT) but this wide screen thing fits OK in the side bag at an angle.

I do not have a normal "Top Pack" but use a large soft bag across the back rack and both side bags.

That's what the "radio box" on the RTP is for. cool.gif

Seriously, in a padded case ($20 from Staples). The other choice is a laptop-backpack--$60 from Staples. Has padded straps, and a padded interior case to put the laptop in. I don't care for the backpack, it adds weight, and prevents airflow, but it works.

I travel with my Dell 700M in a fitted padded case laying flat on top of other items in the top case. Never a problem yet. Good luck.

Another option which worked very well on my last trip was public libraries. Most have internet access now.

I am now a card carrying member of the Wapakoneta library (had to to - to use the terminals there wave.gif)

I carried a Toshiba laptop in a Marsee Duffel Bag, on the back of my RT1200 for three weeks and over 3K miles without problem. I packed it in between clothes and it rode fine.

I often carry a wide screen Dell in my Givi topcase, just fits, I pack something soft under it and just use a canvas carry bag for a case when I get where I am going, the canvas case takes up almost no room.

Also when in the top case like that I can pull into many hotel parking lots, flip open the top case, the lid works as a sunshade and it is just the right height to stand behind and "work".

I'll probably carry it like that to the Hotter-N-Hell Tech Daze next week, you can take a look then.

I find that I can just about get a laptop (in its carrying case) into the left hand pannier - but it really is a squeeze (often resulting in the detachment of the lid stay!). I could fit the same laptop into my K75 panniers with no problems at all! - obviously the R series is a quantum leap forward in practicality confused.gif

Cheers

Hello:

I travel with a Vaio 10" screen computer. I put the computer in a sleeve case and load it in the mc topcase. I tend to put the computer top of anything that will absorb vibration. The computer is small enough that It does not take much room in the topcase. I have never had a problem with the computer so far.

My Chicane Tank Bag works perfect for my Dell, both the older Inspiron 1100 with a 14" screen and the new Inspiron 710m with a 12" screen

Exactly! There have been many times when I was unable to travel with my laptop and yes, I must concur, the libraries are great for emergencies. I am also a member of the Ferdinand, IN Public Library.

Seriously though, I have used a padded backpack as well for the shorter duration trips. Anything over a 3 hour drive wreaks havoc on the lower back!
