Cost of Service

How much have you all paid for your major and minor services for your 12RTs? In Boston, 3.5 weeks ago, I paid $380 for the major (12K) service w/ synthetic oil. Today, in Long Beach, I was charged $455 for the minor (18K) service! I feel like while BMW was servicing my bike, the bent me over to "service the account" (to quote Carlin). confused.gif

I expressed my surprise at the price, and they knocked .5 hours off the bill, but still...

Dare I ask what the 24K service will cost me?

I've owned an earlier version RT for about 10 years but I don't recall any routine service amounting to more than 50 bucks or so, or whatever the oil or parts cost.

What Ken said. Attend your nearest tech day the next time one forms up and save thousands of dollars over the life of your bike.

I have come to the conclusion that money can be saved without putting anything at undue risk. I don't think the computer needs to be checked for codes every 6K, and much of my last service was check this and check that. Next time I am going to see if they will just adjust the valves, since I do my own oil changes and am certainly capable of looking at the brake linings, making sure the tire pressure is OK, etc, etc.

I just picked mine up after having the 6k service done. I don't have the bill in front of me but it was around $230.00 which I thought was reasonable.

My 12k yesterday was about $350. As I recall, my 6k was under $200.

My 6k Service was $299.92 eek.gif for a "Deluxe oil change" (Oil change and "check this, check that").

FYI: Won't happen again... I'll learn what I need to know to tackle what I can do at home eg. fluid changes and minor adjustments. (Going to my 1st tech day 8/12). I'll go to the dealer only if the users on this forum suggest it. Lots of folks on this list have a great deal of experience... I have learned (and continue to learn) a great deal about wrenching BMW's from people posting on this forum. So, here's to ya

and thanks for saving me some money... smirk.gif

Essentially my plan as well. I plan on letting the dealer do the first year's work both to keep up with software updates and to let me get the requisite information and any special tools I may need. After that I'll probably let them do the 2 year inspection as this includes the ABS fluid changes. I enjoy working on my bikes (except changing tires). thumbsup.gif

I paid essentially the same as you for the first two services. That's why I was so shocked at the cost of the 18K. I guess since the 6K and 18K are both refered to as "minor services," then they should cost the same. Stupid assumption on my part.

BMW has standard times (FRU) for standard service activities like the 6k, 12k, etc. service. In every dealer I've visited, I could multiply their shop rate by the BMW standard, add parts, and know exactly what I was going to pay.

My 12k service was just a little over $250 and worked out just like I stated above (it was itemized on the bill). If the shop rate where you went wasn't really high, then maybe your service included an activity like brake system service, which I've heard is a major cost item. It also isn't part of the standard mileage service.

It sounds to me like people are getting surprised by the amount of the invoice once the work is completed. I always ask up front what the cost is estimated to be and insist on a call before the price is increased. This forum is great to get a comparative indication of the cost of service and if the estimate is too high, run.

Ultimately, I think what it boils down to is the per hour rate for the wrench (labor).

Materials may fluctuate some... e.g., the cost of oil misc nuts and bolts

But the hourly rate for the tech is where ya get "serviced"

According to my itemized reciept for the 6k service

Total labor cost was 247.50 and hours spent 3.30

Hows $75/hour compare to what others are paying?

6,000 mile service cost $365.00 w/synthetic oil....(5 qts charged for)...$258.00 in labor, rest parts of course....

Surprised at variance in cost across the country........
