This post is here for you all to contribute your discoveries.

What? Your favorite place to get great food on the road.

How? By posting the name, address, simple directions, GPS coordinates (if you can), phone number, type of food, interesting tidbits, menu items that rate high on your list, pictures and anything else descriptive.

Every so often, Denis Stager (stager, here on the board) will gather your posts, collate things by geographical region and the whole ongoing list will end up here. Your individual posts, having been gathered into one place will then be deleted. We will keep your name/handle with your suggestions.

You all should be able to cut and paste from the area you're interested in into a text document so that you can print it out.

Many thanks to Denis for the inspiration and the time he's giving to make this happen.

Great Ribeye steaks, Great Froglegs, unbelieveable hamburgers. And in the morning a great breakfast. And extremely fair prices

And the ride there is only about 22 twisty miles north of I-40 between Ozark and Clarksville. Or about 16 twisty miles east of the Pig Trail, that's hwy 23 north out of the town of Ozark.

Or about 75 twisty miles south of Eureka Springs.

Paved roads to the south and west, fairly good gravel to the east.

I'll get things rolling again by adding the Crosswinds Restaurant at the municipal airport in Payson, AZ. As I understand it, this is a pretty regular breakfast stop of the Arizona Rim Riders. We had the pleasure when we road with them on Sunday.

The service was down home friendly and the breakfast was delicious--biscuits and gravy with real sausage gravy and some of the best eggs benedict I've tasted. The omelets looked great and the home fries were good too. They don't just serve breakfast and I hear that they cater too. There are tables that can be put together family style and theres a big picture window that looks out on the planes and the view beyond.

Miner's Diner

2134 Main Street

Julian, CA

760-765-3753

GPS: N33 04.687 W116 36.108

Do you love real, old fashioned soda fountain fare? Try Miner's Diner in Julian, CA. Get real malts. the kind that are served in a glass with the remainder in the metal mixing can, on the side--two malts in one. Sundaes, phosphates and sodas like the ones you had as a kid (well, at least if you're over 40 ) Yummy stuff!!

Deli and Soda Fountain. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. Sunday-Thursday 8-6, Friday and Saturday 8-8. Oldest marble topped Soda Fountain in San Diego County. This was the Julian Drug Store. Now that is next door and more room is given for the Soda Fountain. Burgers, sandwiches, soda fountain. The food is OK but the desserts from the old fashion Soda Fountain are not to be missed.

This place is on the corner of Main and Washington just as you enter Julian from Santa Ysabel on Hwy 78/79. Turn right, park and walk across the street.

The riding to get there and in the surrounding area is almost as sweet as the desserts!

An old style drive-in with a wonderful shady grassy picnic area to sit and eat. Their AHI BURGER -Fresh Ahi tuna seared RARE with ginger wasabi mayo & asian slaw on a Sciambra bakery egg bun is to die for. Also if they have their Turkey Burger special - it's a great choice.

We spent a very interesting and yummy afternoon in Tip Top Meats , European Delicatessen in Carlsbad, CA in North Coastal San Diego County. This is an Old World style Butcher Shop and huge European Deli. There are large selections of cheeses, wursts, smoked and fresh meats, breads and all manner of European packaged foods. They have spätzle, knödel, jams, sauces, candy, wines, international and domestic beers, etc.

To top it all off, there's a cafe with a full menu, a tempting pastry case and great prices. For example, from the breakfast menu;

Quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Big John's Breakfast - $5.98

3 eggs any style, home fried potatoes and all of our delicious smokehouse bacon, pork link sausage, bratwurst or ham you can eat

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They're open all day. You'll find them if you take Palomar Airport Road, east off of I-5. Take the first right (Paseo del Norte), go about a block and you'll see it on the left.

This would make a great combo trip if you include a visit to the Carlsbad Flower Fields

Could be right out of American Graffiti, but, refreshingly, it wasn't opened recently as a "retro" joint -- it's simply been there forever and hasn't changed. Basic drive-in food: dogs, burgers, fries, onion rings, etc. For something different, give the fried clams a try. Unfortunately, they don't have girls on roller skates bring the food out to you -- you have to go in and get it yourself.

At the intersection of Hwys 9/19 with 129/11, between Dahlonega and Blairsville, GA. This is probably our favorite lunch spot and a great stop before or after riding over Blood Mountain. This quaint restaurant was once an old gas station and the prime seating is on the outdoor deck overlooking the river. Famous for their trout sandwich, but check the specials as well. Excellent home made desserts too! Only open Thursday-Sunday.

Good restaurants aren't hard to come by in this part of the world, but good restaurants in areas worthy of riding are.

The food is good, but it's everything else about Starved Rock Lodge that makes it a favorite riding destination. The Lodge is a 1930s vintage stone and log lodge located within Starved Rock State Park, a 2600 acre forest with 18 canyons, miles of hiking trails, and great views of the Illinois River Valley. This is one of the few areas in Illinois with good riding--the numerous back roads and the routes along the Illinois River are great fun, with some real twisties thrown into the mix.

On most weekends, from Spring through Autumn, you'll find an abundance of motorcycles at Starved Rock. You can enjoy liquid refreshments and a sandwich menu outside on the terrace, or order from a full menu in the restaurant. This place really hops on many weekends, so its advisable to call for reservations.

www.dailypie.com

Pie Town isn't very big; in fact, it's pretty darn small. The Café is on US 60, on the south side of the road. Very easy to find. Pies are all home made, change daily, and look pretty good. I had the Triple Berry pie, which was tart and very tasty. I was too full to have it a la mode, since I had a very good chicken salad sandwich. Prices are reasonable, and everything looked great.

Pie Town does not have a gas station. I mistakenly thought that they did, and arrived with very little fuel. Fortunately, Mike, the owner of the café, is a rider, and keeps a few gallons of gas in his Hog Pen out back to sell to the occasional needy rider.

If you're passing through the area, Pie Town Daily Pie Café is definitely worth the stop. Next time, I'll be sure to leave room for the ice cream.

Note: hours are 8 am to 3 pm, except for Sundays when they stay open until 5 pm. Closed on Mondays.

Golden Jersey Inn

"Our Customers want good tasting food when they eat away from home. We aim to deliver what our Customers want. Most of the menu is traditional, with enough room to add creative, seasonal, and unusual items. Desserts are a big part of our menu because of who we are and our reputation for great homemade ice cream."

The building fits right in at Young's. The Golden Jersey Inn looks like a barn with open wood beam framing and wood plank siding. It looks like a barn because it actually is a barn, constructed with wood pegs and authentic style joinery very similar to our red barn that was built in 1869. The interior is really impressive with the big 9 by 13 inch oak timber frames, and a ceiling over 30 feet high!

One of about 3 buildings in "town"

About 100 straight miles southwest of Oklahoma City. The Meers Store is located on highway 115, 1 1/2 miles north of the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge, where in 1927 the U.S. Forest Service gathered 20 cows and 3 bulls to save the Texas Longhorn from extinction. Take I-44 to Hwy 49. Travel West about 4 miles, to Hwy 58. Turn to the North for about 5 miles to the turn-off to Meers (follow the signs). Now turn to the West for 4 miles and you're there.

Specialty, Meersburger of course. "made from lean Texas Longhorn beef from our own longhorn herd, freshly ground in our kitchen and cooked to order for you the old fashioned way."

And big enough for two!

I used to ride to Las Vegas form Salt Lake City on a regular basis. On those times when I didn't have to take I-15, I would stop at Mom's, regardless of the time of day, just making sure I was hungry when I got there.

Mom's sells a perfect road-food club sandwich. Coke served with crushed ice and any of the home-made pies make for a great pick-me-up on the Wasatch Plateau.

Maria Elena's Restaurant

1450 Gold St

Alviso, CA 95002

4089465336

Located in the sleepy little hamlet of Alviso, sometimes just 'viso, is Maria Elena's. Some of the best Mexican around. Located just kitty corner to the fire station, this place just adds on when they need more space. If you arrive and feel like a cup of joe, go for it! It's got a different but good taste.

I have 4 restaurants for you. Two in central Ca. and 2 in North Carolina

1. F. McLintocks Steak House

750 Mattie Rd. (right beside the 101 freeway)

Pismo Beach, Ca.

805-773-1892

They serve up a great steak with all the trimmings

2. Jocko's Steak House

125 N. Thompson Ave.

Nipomo, Ca.

908-929-3565

Great steak house. Just off the 101 at Teft St. exit in

Nipomo which is just south of Pismo Beach.

3. Wilber's BBQ

Hwy 70 East

Goldsboro, N.C.

They serve some of the best eastern N.C. BBQ you will

ever eat. Top it off with some banana pudding for desert

4. White Swan BBQ

Rt. 301 South

Smithfield, N.C.

Again some great eastern N.C. BBQ. I always come back

to Ca. with some of their BBQ in my suitcase.

The Outlaw Restaurant in Ouray, CO.

If you're touring the Million Dollar Highway and environs, and stay over in Ouray, the Outlaw is very cool. Early West atmosphere, great piano in the bar / waiting area, good food and drink, some large round tables that will seat six or eight riders.

I'll second the Egghead's recommendation.

And add that if you drink a lot of coffee normally, you'll probably want to throttle back

here...it's Thanksgiving Blend and pretty darn strong!

Augie And Ray's Drive In

314 Main St

East Hartford, CT 06118

860-568-3770

Could be right out of American Graffiti, but, refreshingly, it wasn't opened recently as a "retro" joint -- it's simply been there forever and hasn't changed. Basic drive-in food: dogs, burgers, fries, onion rings, etc. For something different, give the fried clams a try. Unfortunately, they don't have girls on roller skates bring the food out to you -- you have to go in and get it yourself.

Southern Exposure

139 Park Cir

Faison, NC

Tel: (910) 267-2491

Small restuarant in the small town of Faison. Excellent food and good atmosphere. What a pleasant suprise. I have been there several times and never had a bad meal. One of the best in this local region.

Sit looking south across the 101. You will see a sign that says "Alex BBQ." Excuse yourself from your table, and drive over to Alex....You won't be sorry! clap.gif
