NEOHMark
I just bought an '02 1150RT with 35k miles on it. In perusing my owners manual and 'Service and Technical Booklet', I found this entry: Master Clutch June 05 replaced I cross-referenced the 'Confirmation of Maintenance' stamps at the front of the booklet to find that the bike had a servicing on July 1, 2005 at 26,243 miles. So it looks like my bike got a new clutch a little over a year ago at appx. 25k miles. I have two questions: 1) Isn't that a bit odd to have a clutch replaced at 25k? 2) Would a spline lube be included during the normal course of reassembly of the clutch? I'm wondering why this bike would've needed a clutch at 25k - but the bike seems to be pristine. No other evidence of abuse or neglect. In fact, the maintenance schedule is pretty well-documented and appears the vast majority of the work was done at the selling dealership. Plus - it rides good a 'tight'. I also test rode an '05 1200RT that was considerably 'looser' with lots of creaks, rattles and groans in comparison. My 1150, by contrast, feels like a brand new bike. Any thoughts? Link to comment
Boffin
It is possible to wear out the dry clutch on these bikes in that kind of mileage if the clutch is used to brake the bike whilst down-shifting. DAMHIK Other than an expensive repair - 8 hours shop time plus parts - there will be no other damage. Clutch changing is the only time BMW specifies spline lube, so it should have been done. On re-reading your post - it says 'Master clutch' - that sounds more like the master cylinder than the clutch - had the bike been dropped - static drops are common on these beasts. smiller
As Andy noted, 'Master Clutch' may mean just the clutch master cylinder was serviced. You might want to give the dealer a call just to find out what was actually done for your own future reference, but beyond that if the bike is running well I wouldn't spend any time worrying about it. Paul Mihalka
If it was the clutch that got replaced, it may have been just a leaking oil seal. No abuse or extended damage. Link to comment
