strat
OK well my trip to spokane has been hijacked by this light and/or switch! I stop for gas..fil er up turn the key on and no neutral light even tho my gear indicator in the fuel window indicates O. put the sidestand down numerous times wiggle the sidestand switch a bunch, roll the bike a bunch then push it for a mile with the key in in neutral in hopes it comes on. Get to a friends house to park it find a ride home an now I'm leaving for Spokane in my TRUCK GRRRRRRRR...guess I need a new switch...I should probably get both the tranny and the sidestand...is there any way to eliminate the sidestand switch so that is out iof the loop? NEOHMark
Aw man. I'm SO sorry to hear about this. Don't let it ruin your trip though. Chump change in the long run...... Link to comment
PRC
If the RID indicates "0", I would say that 98% of the time you're in N. I never put the bike in N, I just hold in the clutch when stopped and stay in 1 (motor training did that to me). Why would a faulty light prevent you from riding? Is the motor not starting? Paul Mihalka
Having a bad neutral light switch is fairly common on R1100 bikes. It is independent from the "0" indication in the gear window. It should start with the clutch pulled. If not, you also may have a bad clutch switch. Link to comment
Jim Moore
If you have both failures, the simplest fix is to cut the wires going to the clutch switch and wire them together. Don't hit the starter with the bike in gear and the clutch out if you make that change. Link to comment
topdal46
Seems like over kill,, put the bike in Neutral and hold in the clutch when you start it, works fine that way. You really didn't drive it? Hell you could have push started it even..... Link to comment
Santron
If you're talking about a flakey neutral light, then welcome to the club. My R1100RT-P has been doing it ever since I bought it. I could have had the dealer replace it for free but it wasn't even worth taking it up to them to get the work done. Mostly mine takes a few seconds for the light to come on but it almost always does. The gear position indicator oin the dash is always correct so I just glance at that. Link to comment
Paul De
How did we ever survive riding bikes back when little indicator lights were limited to high beam and may be turn signals? I would have no worries about riding the bike with the neutral light on vacation. I'm guessing you have a winter lay up in Idaho when the snow flies, which is the perfect time to fix the problem. Until then, ride ride ride!!!! Link to comment
Jim Moore
I would have no worries about riding the bike with the neutral light on vacation. The problem is that the bike won't start in neutral if the light doesn't come on. Link to comment
PRC
The problem is that the bike won't start in neutral if the light doesn't come on. If that's the only problem, shift into 1st, hold in the clutch and then start. Again, why push when you can ride? Link to comment
Jim Moore
True enough. I thought he had a problem with the clutch switch also. Link to comment
Davis
Even if the clutch switch was also bad and he didn't want to cut the wires and bypass the clutch switch, by the time he pushed it a mile you'd think he could have bump started it somewhere. Link to comment
strat
Well this is a new bike to me and I finally did figure out that you can just pull the clutch in and it will override the green light kill and start. So I ended up riding to Spokane anyway bike ran great got to see me son went ot a concert Tom Petty with Trey anastasio and Stevie Nicks plus I learned something about my bike so all the trouble was definitely worht the learning curve. Thanks for all the help Cheers Cruiser Link to comment
firemedic
Mine does the same, glad I am not alone. Not a big deal. Link to comment
strat
I did try to bump start it, that's what got me down the hill htat I had to puxh back up. but it wouldn't start that way and it made some pretty nasty noises trying that. Cheers Cruiser Link to comment
Charles Elms
I've had the same problem with my neutral switch for about 3 years. Always pull in clutch when starting. Will replace switch when access is provided doing other critcal work. Link to comment
John in VA
I've had the same problem with my neutral switch for about 3 years. My neutral light started getting flakey occasionally. Replacing the transmission oil fixed it and not a problem since. Link to comment
