RTRay
I went out this morning to ride for a while before the 100+ heat hits, and started out into the street on my 1997 R1100RT. It started up normally and ran fine, but my ABS warning lights both stayed on. (This has happened repeatedly over the past few weeks) I came to a stop and turned the bike off and then back on to restart and let the ABS system reset, which I have done in the past to get it to reset itself. When I turned the key back to "ON" to restart the bike I had NOTHING! No electrical, no lights, no fuels pump sound, NOTHING! I pushed the bike back into the garage and tried everything I knew to get the electrical system to come back on but to no avail. However, when I turned the key to the "R" position my radar detector would come on and my clock came on at 0:00, but nothing else would power up. I plugged my bike back into the Backup charger and with an hour I had full power again. Now (two hours later) I turned the key to "ON" again and I have nothing but the clock, which reads 0:00. Does this sound like a battery prtoblem or a short somewhere in the system? I have NO BMW dealer around here anymore to help since my local dealer went out of business a couple of months ago. Any ideas? Thanks, Terry Link to comment
Doom
RT OK , Battery, RIP . Seems like new batterys like to die completely, a sudden death, with no real warning. All assuming that the charging system is functioning properly! Link to comment
bmwmick
Terry, Get a new battery on order. ( Mick Link to comment
RTRay
I didn't consider the battery because it is only 2 years old. Where can I get a good battery for the RT that isn't ungodly expensive? Thanks, Terry Link to comment

Thanks, Terry Terry, http://www.batteriesasap.com/111.html Has the Panasonic LC-X1220P that I use in my R1100RT for $43 plus shipping. That is about the best price since DigiKey is out of stock on them right now. My riding buddy just got one for about $53 shipped. I've been using these batteries since 1995 in all my bikes and I replace them every 4 years. Mick Link to comment
RTRay
Thanks Guys! I just ordered a battery and it should be here in a few days. Replacing it will give me a chance to hook up my accessory power panel I just ordered and my Piaa lights and heated grips. I have been putting off doing this work because the riding weather has been decent. I have had the past ten days off though and planned on doing it on this little vacation--but it has been too hot to work in the garage!! 97+ deg today with a heat index of 110! Maybe even hotter tomorrow--so the job will have to wait for my next days off and a cooler garage. Fans blowing hot air around on you don't do any good when the humidity is so high. I HATE summer in Illinois!! Thanks, Terry Link to comment
bmwmick
Terry, It's been in the low 70's here in Tucson lately. Today is the hottest it's been in over a week and I 'think' it made 83 at my house. Mick Link to comment
RTRay
I was in Tuscon last October at the Pima Air Museum walking around in 100+ deg heat--and I didn't mind! It makes a great difference to have 20% humidity and not 70% like we have here. I would gladly take a HOT day out west with low humidity over a warm day here with high humidity. It's going to be about 100 deg today also but should drop down to the 80's tomorrow and the 70's Thursday. Terry Link to comment

Next time do the Titan Missile Museum too. I worked on the Titan systems when I was in the Air Force, REALLY neat to see all the stuff I touched back in the late 60's. ***Thread Hijack officially over*** Mick Link to comment
