What's this, the Viagra motorbike jacket?

This excerpt from a longer AFP story about the European Space Agency helping specialised clothing manufacturers come up with new gear for extreme conditions:

Italian designers Grado Zero, working with ESA, aim to market commercially from September a leather motorbike jacket with an in-built rider protection.

A special gel system in the shoulders and elbows ensures the jacket is supple when worn, but those areas immediately harden on impact cushioning the wearer. At the back, a strip incorporated into the jacket shines with a blue moving light at night.

The jacket, which will retail at about 1,000 euros and be personally fitted, has also been treated to keep the wearer warm in winter and cool in summer, even though it is made of ultra-thin leather.

"The idea was to create a jacket for all seasons," managing director Filippo Pagliai said.

What do ya think? The world's first Viagra jacket? Something that would give a surprise to the office pal who comes up behind you to place a hearty slap on the back of your new Robocop leather jacket.....

That could be, but Aerostich, an American riding suit company has offered this type of foam protection in their suits for a few years.

Reminds me of a science fiction book I read some years ago. Soldiers had light-as-a-feather clothing that would immediately harden on impact from a projectile causing bullets to bounce off. And today's cars look like the cars in the "What cars of the future will look like" when I was a kid in the fifties.

Somehow I doubt Aerostitch has had, for years, gel that hardens on impact. I could be wrong.

Aerostitch does not offer this level of technology, though their suits are very good and I have owned two. AS has two densities of foam padding and static displays of reflectivity.

Aerostich offers TF2, a foam pad that "instantly stiffens on impact to absorb energy...." It's not gel, but may be something similar.

There is also a Co. that has a jacket that inflates with Co2 to form an airbag around your torso and neck. Can't remember the name of the jacket or where I saw it, but not a bad idea. Phil

Yeah, the TF2 is pretty remarkable stuff. It's pretty supple until you whack it, then it stiffens on impact. Like you said, it may not be a gel, but it performs the same function as the material described in the article above.
