Sam_ Posted May 27, 2024 Posted May 27, 2024 Brief re-introduction. Third BMW now. Started with a '95 R1100R, went to an '06 K1200S (which you might remember the rather dramatic crash then fixed-ish thread) and now this. '04 Rockster with 26k km. Pics below, context will be provided here. Made a post early last week about extended brake fluid intervals and decided to just go ahead and buy it and deal with the consequences later. I've wanted a Rockster and this is the cleanest and lowest mileage one I've seen in the colour I wanted. On to the fun stuff that I haven't told about it yet: Previous owner was... incompetent. I clearly didn't look closely enough the first time I saw it because the digital clock was now not working (may not have been the first time but I believe it was), and then I saw the melting backplate, and then I saw the screws holding the windscreen in, which made me audibly gasp. Did some research before committing but it looks like the entire bezel assembly comes apart and I can buy all the individual pieces I'll need (presumably including the harness) right from BMW. Absolute worst case, I can replace the entire assembly with a used one from eBay, but finding one in KM hasn't proven super easy. It's really the only thing the guy messed with and has otherwise been cared for (obviously besides the brake fluid). Has brand new Sportmax's and the factory soft bags. Besides the monstrosity that's the windscreen, bar risers and lowered pegs, the bike is original. Has anyone else seen something this stupid? 3

Morning Sam_ It looks like that windshield mounting angle & shape has allowed the windshield to magnify the sunlight (like a magnifying glass) then concentrate it on your dash plastic & melt it. So, if you install a new dash be sure to address that (probably a new different design windshield or at least a different mounting angle).

That seems pretty unlikely to me. I’m about 99.9999999999999999999% it’s because it shorted. Windscreen’s being replaced either way but given the hack job involved with how it was actually mounted and that the clock doesn’t work, there’s no way there isn’t a short.

Afternoon Sam Good luck, but don't bet against the windshield & concentrated sun load. Link____ https://www.gixxer.com/threads/who-is-responsible-for-my-melted-dash.281453/page-2
R65_Steve Posted May 28, 2024 Posted May 28, 2024 Nice bike. I have the same color. I haven't seen in a two weeks cause it's at the shop getting a fuel issue sorted out and waiting on a part from Germany. I'll create a thread about it when it's fixed. 1
Sam_ Posted May 29, 2024 Author Posted May 29, 2024 Can’t work on it until Friday anyhow. Garage floor got epoxied and won’t be refilled until then. I’ll know very quickly afterwards.

Replies from a mechanic said he'd replaced a few under warranty.
