Hello,

I just bought a 2000 R1100RT with 26,500 miles. It ran great for awhile but,  when I changed the rear tire and brake pads it will not start. It turns over and is getting fuel, but will not fire. Do y'all have any idea where to start?VideoCapture_20240505-063019.thumb.jpg.4729c0d02e706aa2293b91937a221ada.jpg

That’s a beauty.  The 1100RT normally will not turn over if the side stand is down or the kill switch is in the off position. Make sure the bike is in neutral and the big green N light is on the dash is lit up. When you turn the key On, the RID, rider information display, should show gear and fuel level. Clock is on all the time. When you turn the key on, you should hear the fuel pump cycle on for 1-2 seconds then shut off. If any of that isn’t happening, let us know.

Afternoon Chris_The_Wookie

Michael, covered the usual basics. And that is great starting point.

Any chance that you plugged off the muffler when you washed it forgot to remove the plug (it happens!)

I have made sure the side stand was up and in neutral and kill switch in the run pos. I wasshed it using 2 different spray bottles and rags. One with soap and one with just water. It was running fine until I changed the rear brake pads and tire.

Did you wash it after the brake install, if so then suspect the HES wire pigtail is degraded & now wet so the HES signal cross-talks then you get no spark.

Check to see if you are getting a spark while cranking.

Also, turn the key to ON then see if your tachometer is acting erratic.

Did you do ANYTHING else to that motorcycle about the same time you installed the brakes?

I just went out and took this video of what it's doing, the battery sounds low now, but when it first happened it wasn't.

You are probably going to have to check for/verify spark, then work from there.

Would also be a good idea to check fuse #5  & fuse #6  for being blown.

You did not respond to the question about the fuel pump running when you first turn the key on.   Does it??  That sounds like either fuel or spark is not there.

If you sprayed a bunch of water at the front of the engine you may have shorted out your Hall Effect Sensor, AKA HES, AKA ignition timer. It would be a little hard to do with a spray bottle (it normally happens in the rain, on the interstate, at night) but the symptoms match.

You can buy one from EuroMotoElectric (link below) or you can send yours to a guy named GSAddict on the advrider website. He'll rewire it for you. You need to do it anyway if it hasn't been done. I'd probably buy a new one AND eventually send mine off to be rewired. throw it in a saddlebag to have a spare.

Someone asked about your fuel pump priming at key on. That's a good question. Can you hear it?

As long as you have the tank off to do the HES you might as well replace your brake lines with stainless steel. That's the other known weak point as these bikes start to age.

Besides those issues, that bike is liable to run forever. I put 100K miles on one, 129K miles on another, 50K on three others, almost 350K miles total. They just can't be killed.

That's a mighty pretty motorcycle you have there.  I owned an 2004 R1150RT now sold.  Presently I own a '93 R1100RSL with only 15,000 original miles every one put on by me and it's  the best BMW I've ever owned and I would take an 1100 over an 1150 any day for a lot of reasons and we won't even talk about anything recent from der fatherland.   Put a Russel Day Long saddle on it and away you go.

Morning   Chris_The_Wookie

You need to check for spark, if no spark then we will help you find out why you have no spark.

If you have a spark then we can talk you through a fuel return fuel flow test.

If you managed to get the HES wet (it doesn't take much water if it hit the HES wiring) then it m-i-g-h-t  start if you put the motorcycle out in the hot sun for a few days. If you do this & it starts in a few days then you will need to either replace the HES or have your present HES rewired.

We can help you but you need to answer our questions as we can't see or work on that motorcycle so you are our eyes & ears.

You didn't answer this question__     Did you do ANYTHING else to that motorcycle at the time that you installed the brakes?

Nope, just that. I checked the Hall sensor harness and the wires are corroded.  I have a new one on the way. Thanks again for all the help!!
