JamesW Posted May 18, 2024 Posted May 18, 2024 I decided to repack my Dominator muffler mainly for experience and it has always been a little noisier than I would really like it to be. I chose a ceramic material on Amazon that turned out to be a great choice. Was an easy job using stainless rivets, size: 1/8" grip range and 3/16" diameter, that I bought at the local hardware. I had to drill all 10 holes to fit the non-metric rivets which was easy using a cobalt drill bit. I decided not to drill and reinstall the two thin stainless bands on the ends of the muffler which was a good idea as not doing so cleaned up the appearance of the muffler, imo. Took a test drive with speeds up to 95 MPH and long and short is I like the results very much. The motorcycle was quieter and the sound kind of reminded me of the sound coming from a stock exhaust system. At idle the bike was very smooth and pleasant. Long and short this was a worthwhile project and I really like the simplified clean appearance without the end trim rings. Would have been difficult to drill the trim ring mounting holes because of the thin stainless material and absolutely not worth it. If I ever have to do this again I'll use the same size rivets only aluminum instead of stainless. Aluminum would be far easier than stainless and would look much the same as stainless. I would just rough up the inside of the can with a piece of sandpaper to give the aluminum rivets a better grip on the stainless can since aluminum is softer and might have a tendency to spin when attempting to remove by drilling the rivet head with a 3/4" drill bit which would not be good and make removal difficult to say the least. Hope this helps anyone doing a muffler repack. 2
King Herald Posted May 19, 2024 Posted May 19, 2024 I did mine a couple of weeks ago, but I only pulled one end off, which took some doing. When I pulled it apart I noticed big ‘cavities’ in the existing glass pack where it had obviously broken down over the 50,000 miles it’s seen. The stuff I bought was the exact length of the muffler, 400mm, and is sewn flat with some sort of low melting temp thread, to make it easier to insert, so once it gets warm the thread let’s go and the ‘glass loosens up to fill the muffler better. This is in the U.K. ebay.
