How to make the GS Gold Wheels work

I never warmed to the gold rims on the GS or GSA. But check this out, this one works for me!  What’s this got to do with anything meaningful you ask? Nothing really, local bike for sale that I’m trying to talk myself into.

PS.. not this bike but ideas of what it could become.

Pat - I can't same I'm a fan of the gold rims either but the one in the picture is a good looking motorcycle.  I do think there's some photo manipulation with it but still not a bad look. Ironically, I'm going to look at a similar bike this weekend for possible  purchase.  But I seriously doubt I'll be swapping out the black rims for gold ones.  :)

if you always wanted to learn how to tig weld like me, those crash bars would be a great project. They look expensive to buy off the shelf.

Morning SonofSaturn

You don't want to LEARN TIG welding on thin walled tubing if it is going to be used in a place that can be seen.  It takes a fairly experienced welder to make decent looking TIG welds on a project like that.

Right on! Plus, bending and tig welding without a precise fixture would make fit up a nightmare.

I used to bend that 1/2" tubing by the mile for my old job. I wouldn't need to use a jig, i can free hand it. I can pick up pieces of 1/2''  stainless steel tubing out of the bins around here.

As for practicing welding, I don't have to leave the welds exposed if they suck. As I say, grinder and paint because a welder I ain't. I can start to do exposed welds once I get good. I am already an artist, it's some of the same skills.

Big difference in working with 1/2" tubes & working with 1"OD .075"-.095" engine guard tubing.

Seems like a small difference to me. Nor is that 1'' tube. But I suppose you just like to argue. I am not arguing with you about if I can do it. Maybe you are thinking of you. You can't do it, which is fine.

Don't tell me I can't do something because you can't do it. And don't disagree with me just to be disagreeable, thanks.

With 22K posts, you should not conclude that the dean of maintenance on this board is looking to argue or be disagreeable. Maybe he is just giving some experienced, thoughtful counsel.  Sorry. But not a good look from a newbie with 7 posts.

OK, but how does his experience with creating posts on this forum have anything to do with my ability to weld or bend tubing? Do you think that posting 20,000 times on this forum gives you some insight into my history, what I have built or how? I don't think that gives him any. Obviously he has a bunch of monkeys. Good for him.

I mentioned that would be a project to practice welding. Now I have mean girl cheerleaders making comments from the side, AT me?

What a cool little corner of the internet you people have carved out.

Maybe you are the argumentaive one. This is a much more collegial board than what you may be accustomed to. What the heck was wrong with a response like "thanks for your input but I think I can do what I am describing."  Why so confrontational.??

are you playing 'argue with anything' as a joke? Is this a monty python sketch? I am not arguing with you. I am not making statements for you to disagree with. Your dude who thinks he should tell me what I can't do, can take his advice, and hand it to you so that you can argue with it. Have your cheerleader mean girl cheer you on if you want.

And you can do it in a little circle. OK? Leave me alone.

Leave you alone? You started this.

I learned a long time ago that you have one chance to make a good first impression. You have not done so. Maybe you should just leave us alone and go away. You posted looking for feedback then you attacked the feedback. I really don't need to spend time on this board dealing with guys like you. Luckily , we have the ability to block posters, which I will do with jerks like you.

Seriously .... you posted a comment and DirtRider responded in a courteous manner that he did not believe it was a good idea.  Then things went off the rails.  Randy simply indicated that there are some senior members of this site who are well respected and just "know stuff".  Not suggesting that you don't but that a few have been around here and around the block and are folks who are well respected and most always correct.  In addition your being the new guy with only a handful of posts who no one knows does not add to the situation.   Hopefully cooler heads will prevail and we can all move on.

Oh ... and I do like the gold wheels on the green 1300!  Just sayin!

PS…. way less hostility in the old FT just saying.

Every once in a while a new gunslinger rolls into town, I think one has been exposed tonight. To the new guy, take a deep breath, readjust your attitude and try again. Everybody here is about helping out fellow bike enthusiasts. No insults were purposely sent your way I can promise you that.

Specifically, what you said  ↑↑↑.  Self admitting that you ain't a welder, thus the courteous advise of dirtrider from likely decades (that's with an s) of experience, then you throw a temper tantrum.

Good luck here.

Green on gold looked good, if it was in stock when I got the GSA, I'd probably have the gold ones, but, since I don't wash, they be black as the black ones are now.

I am familiar with tubing, welding, thin walls, and what I do and don't wanna do. You don't know me. I have decades, with an S, of experience too. I don't care if some guy who has posted on your forum 25,000 times thinks I won't be able to do it. I don't need your advice about how that might be hard. I am absolutely certain that he can't do it. I bet you can't do it. That's fine. Go tell yourself you can't do it. Don't involve me. I don't like you.

Then the yapping from all of you? Outright hostility from every little keyboard warrior who wants to pile on and tell me how wrong I am? Have you ever met a welder? Did you think he had some skill that you would never master? I bet you did.

Thanks for the 'welcome'. You can keep it. Do you assholes act like this with everyone? Don't answer, I don't care.

That bike seems to be having an identity crisis.  I can’t say I’ve ever seen white crash bars and black panniers before.  Strange but I think like the gold rims better with this paint scheme.

The panniers are actually gray Jesse's. I had a local guy do black wrap inserts on the panniers. Much better than the gray.
