Domino Theory of Repairs

Fix one thing just so something else can let loose.....

Finally got around to swapping out the muffler. Wasn't that bad of a job other than the normal RT headaches. Was thinking about replacing the O2 sensor while it was out in the open, but decided against it. Started up a bit slow as the idle wasn't happy. but drove it around a bit to clear out whatever cobwebs were in my Ebay replacement. Idle still isn't where it should be but that is overshadowed by this:

Goes away with increased RPM or pulling the clutch handle in.The only thing done with the transmission during the swap was placing it in 1st, then back to Neutral. Are we hearing clutch or tranny? Fluids are fresh and didn't have any issue before swap other than a bit of a whine, which I was taking as normal or me being sensitive.

Morning  Brucifer1150

Can we assume the transmission noise wasn't there before muffler replacement?

Did you remove or lift the fuel tank or otherwise work with or around the throttle cables?

If so then you need to get your idle straightened out as that sounds like transmission gear rattle. If your engine doesn't idle smoothly the transmission gears can rattle.

If that gear rattle wasn't there before your muffler work then first thing to check is that both side throttle cables are CORRECTLY seated in the throttle body cable  adjusters, make sure that a  cable end isn't sitting on top of an adjuster rather than being down in it. (common cause of a ratty idle after working around the engine).

If a throttle cable is not found sitting on top of a throttle body adjuster then make sure one of the cables isn't slightly pulled out of the bowden box.

If I could bear you children, I would.

I will check on that later in the week (busy at work). I had to lift the tank in order to get the O2 sensor pigtail swapped. Also, added a trickle charger pigtail.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I'll report back as soon as I can.

The right side throttle cable was sitting on the edge of the adjuster and plopped right back into place. Transmission noise was gone after that.

Thank you, again.

It’s quite amazing how badly they tick over when that happens. Mine felt like it was missing a piston or something, with all the fuss it made! Isn’t it nice when a problem is so easily solved? Glad it’s sorted, enjoy the 1150 torque!
