Nelson-Rigg CL-2014 Strap Mount Tank Bag Review

A tank bag offers a strategic location to store important, easily accessed items. Being well protected by the handlebars, it’s also a safer place to store more delicate items like cell phones and cameras when riding off road. The Nelson-Rigg CL-2014 Strap Mount Tank Bag is a feature-rich, well-built bag that’s ready for adventure.

Although also available in a magnetic version, the strap-mounting feature offers a more reliable connection for off-road riding. A front strap wraps around the steering head and a rear strap with one-piece design loops around a frame tube or rear of the tank. The buckles are hard mounted to non-skid base plates that swivel so they will line up with the straps, since no two motorcycles are the same. There’s also a separate shoulder strap that attaches to three mounted D-rings so the bag can double as a makeshift backpack if the bike has to be left behind.

The bag tends retains its shape and is made with a UV-treated ballistic nylon. Its bottom is rubberized to prevent slipping and paint marring but, like any bag with a rubberized base, getting dirt underneath can still scuff the paint or plastic over time. Reflective piping material and logos help with nighttime visibility and the rear has a sturdy carry handle with a large reflective logo. In the front is a wire passthrough grommet for USB and other cords to charge or power your gadgets inside the bag. All zippers are reverse coil, which helps keep dust out of the bag. There are two easy-access, thin zippered pockets on each side that are great for smaller items such as GoPro batteries or snacks. The top has a large, clear touchscreen-friendly pocket for storing a cell phone, map, or GPS, and can only be accessed from inside the bag. But be aware, with any of these clear pockets electronics can overheat in direct sunlight.

The main compartment has a seven-liter capacity and opens with a double lockable zipper. The lid’s underside has pen holders, a mesh pocket, and a key chain clip. This is also where the clear pocket is accessed with a Velcro flap. A zipper around the bottom quickly expands the seven-liter compartment to 10 liters, handy when a little extra room is needed. The tank bag also comes with a waterproof rain liner. It’s a bit bulky when folded but it also has a clear window on the top. Under a five-minute extreme downpour test with the rain liner installed, the inside of this bag remained completely dry.
