Lots of police & military guarding the various heads of government, including our Prime Minister & the US President.

The Special Escort Group of the Metropolitan Police have managed to give their motorcycles a run outside the confines of the capital city.

There are worse ways to earn a living........

Surprised they use RS's

They have used RS's for a number of years now, starting with R1100's, which were taken into service just a few weeks befoire the death of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997.

When you have to get back from Cornwall to London, to meet the President & the First Lady, & escort them both to meet the Queen at Windsor Castle, there is only one way to travel.....

I watched a 30 minute doc on the SEG on YouTube.  Amazing, fearless riders.  I was so surprised about them using whistles instead of sirens.  Really attention getting.  Still, I'd rather not ride in London.

The whistle works, although it is low key. No sirens fitted on the SEG bikes.

This may be the one you saw

I would have thought the RT would be preferred.

My understanding was that the R1100RT-P was created for the US market. I recall testing a K75RT-P in '96 or '97 for BMW NA....... Wasn't quick enough. They came back the next year with the R1100RT-P and we bought those.

No; two reasons. SEG bikes always look different to normal patrol bikes, which at this time is the R1200RT-P & some new 1250's coming through. The RT is rather bulky for the job in hand.

The R1100RT-P was offered world wide in 1995 by BMW Authorities. I tested one in the spring of 1996. Nice bike, but the 1150 was better IMHO.

Some agencies here use HDs. The RT is a sport bike by comparison.

2006, BikeSafe police event in Cheltenham. A demo. bike, at that time on loan to Devon & Cornwall police. A colleague rode this the 150 miles or so from Plymouth to the event. On the Sunday evening, faced with riding it back home again, he debated slashing the tyres so he could be driven back home by a recovery truck.....

Personally, I don't blame him for that thought.

They may be heavy and slow, but at least the suspension sucks....

Hi Ya Martyn,

I really liked all of the photos.  I remember Princess Diana's

funeral well.  At the time I was living in Bermondsey,

working for the Crown Courts, as I'm a court Stenographer.

William and I are waiting till the quarantine period is dropped

so we can fly over to visit my family in Liverpool.

Do you ever make it up to the ACE CAFE.

Love going there to see all the motorbikes and have a cuppa.

Ride safe, and thanks again.

I used to go the The Ace on a regular basis in my former life (!) but since retirement not so often. Best wishes for your trip, soon hopefully.
