I have a 2019 R1250 RT. and I don't use the dash speakers on my bike. I prefer to use the speakers in my helmet. So I know we are all looking for additional storage space for odds and end things that were want to carry. But don't use very often. So I have been contemplating removing the 2 speakers from the dash. And using that space to store things that I don't use very often. Like tire pump, tire repair kit, things that take up space in the side cases.

 

When you remove the speaker assembly and look inside the empty cavity there is a fare amount of room where the speak fits in the cavity. And the back side of the cavity has areas open to the environment. So if you use this area to store anythings it will have to be water resistant. So I was wondering does anyone know of a company who makes a plastic shell inserts that mimics the shape of the speaker box and would replace the speaker assembly under the grill.

 

I have been contemplating making something that would fit into this cavity. And try to mimic the shape of the back side of the speaker box. And I would still use the speaker grill for the cover of the insert. I don't have access to a 3 d printer. So my next thought was to look into some kind of modeling clay, to build a mold around the out side shape of the speaker box. Giving me an open box that is the same shape as the original speaker box and insert into the cavity. But before I do any of that I thought I would see if anyone already make such a item 1st.

 

So if you know anyone who does make such a thing please be so kind as to let me know.

I've removed the speakers and use the space, as is, for my tire pump, tools, etc.  It is a bit inconvenient to retrieve items since two screws need to be removed to access the area.

 

Never concerned myself with making it water tight.  It will hold quite a bit with some planning/packing.

thanks for your quick response. I agree that there is a fair amount of room to carry the odds and end things. And I agree that the 2 screws are a hassle to work with. Maybe there is a quick disconnect fastener that can be used. Will need to look into that too. As for the water tight issue I am more concerned with there are some holes open to the out side environment in the cavity. And I want to seal those areas off too. I am still investigating how I want to close off those area.

hey i you ever get to the 3D printer idea, i can help with the 3D modeling but you would still need to find the printer. at some university they would likely be able to do that

Chris thanks for offering up the 3D modeling option. I don't have access to 3D modeling or a printer any more due to my retirement. But I do have a friend in the club that can help me with the 3D modeling. But I would still have to find a 3D printer.

So bear with me on this and let me explain what I have done.

 

I took the speakers out and looking inside the cavity and there are a coupe areas that are exposed to the elements in the back of the cavity. I looked at the options suggested on the MOA site earlier. Buying some small container and or using some water proof bags of some sort.  As far as the small containers are concerned I was having trouble finding what I wanted. And I thought of using zip lock bags. And I wasn't sure if I wanted to do that yet. 

 

So I went down the path of building a cardboard box by taping pieces together to build the shape to fit in the cavity. And to try to use up as much of the cavity as the box would allow me after fully constructed. Knowing that after the box was built I would have to remove it to than build a 3D cad model based off the shape I just made.  So that it could be 3D printed. And there would also have to be a RH and a LH box to be made too. And after the box was constructed the cavity was reduce quite a bit. Quite a bit of time and effort into that plan of attack.

 

So I than I abandon that idea and started thinking of what materials that could be molded to form the inside shape of the cavity. Be water proof, and be strong enough to keep the shape. And allows me to use as much of the space as possible. And I chose to use thick aluminum foil. It's malleable, water proof, and it’s fairly durable. And doesn't weigh much and doesn't take up much room away from the cavity. I also took some zip lock bag material and cover up the back side of the speaker grill too. To help keep the cavity water resistant.

I think it does what I was looking for. And ya you have to undue a couple screws to get to the stuff. But I am ok with that and the stuff I put inside the cavities will not be used very often and hopefully never.

I attached a power point of what it looks like before and after. And what I was able to put in the new storage area. And medical kit one one side and a tire pump and tire repair kit on the other side.
